The Great Plains Indians were basically the same as the Inuit and their whole lives rotated around hunting, but unlike the Inuit they lived in a very hot region, the buffalo provided everything for them and so they followed the herds instead of staying in one place and sending out hunting parties. Because of this they didn't have heavy shelters. These shelters were called teepees and they were the only people to have them in the world. Teepees were moved about by the use of a travois and dogs, or horses. A travois was made up of the cross beams of the teepee that were placed in a triangular shape with persona items placed on top. Also war was important to them as with the Eastern woodlands people and they created a way of seeing how brave each other were by counting coup. Counting Coup means to get close to your enemy and touch them without hurting them, and trying to do it as many times as possible. The Great plains Indians were the first group of Indians to have horses which they called mystery dogs. The horses made hunting much easier, and so many people came from other groups to hunt buffalo. |
